3. Design & Construct

Designing the website interface
Having a professionally designed website often means the difference between a prospect viewing your site and them becoming your customer – especially when it comes to online stores. A website needs to be designed so it displays all the information efficiently, is easy to navigate and accurately reflects the business brand and image. There’s nothing worse than going to a website that has been poorly designed or which has not followed standard design principles. At KDG, we use professional Graphic Designers to produce enviable interface layout designs that suit your business and the products/services you sell.

Before our Graphic Designers can start work, they need to make sure that the sitemap has been decided and all appropriate visual information (eg. Photos, graphics and logos etc) has been collected and supplied during Stages 1 and 2. Once all this information has been made available, our Graphic Designers will create a static mock-up (screen-shot) of what the website will look like, taking into account guidelines and parameters discussed during the Consultation and in Stage 1 – Research & Planning.

You will then be sent the mock-up so you can review and approve the design. If you would like us to make some changes to the mock-up design, now is the best time as future alterations may incur additional production costs. Any changes will be made as requested* and the design will be re-sent to you for approval. This process is repeated as many times as necessary until you are 100% satisfied with the design. Once we receive final approval (sign-off) will we proceed to the next stage of the development process.

*Note: Our Graphic Designers are highly trained professionals and are well versed in issues such as usability and functionality – so if a suggestion you make regarding the website design conflicts with our rudimentary website design principles, they will most likely recommend against the changes being made. Despite our recommendations, our objective is to satisfy our clients so what ever changes you insist on will be made.

Constructing the website
There are many ways to build websites these days but only the experts know how to create websites that really work. And by ‘really work’, we mean cross-browser compatible, W3C compliant and search engine friendly websites that get your business noticed. KDG have been developing websites since 1999 and in that time, we’ve discovered the secrets to constructing quality websites that ‘really work’.

After finalising the Interface Design, KDG will begin construction of your website using the programming language ASP (Active Server Pages) with connection to an MS Access database. When constructing your website, KDG’s Programmers and Web Developers will follow global W3C standards which demand that all websites follow the 3 development principles of Interoperability, Evolution and Decentralisation. By conforming to these fundamental principles issued by the W3C, your website will have the potential of reaching a larger user base. For more information regarding the W3C Standards, see www.w3.org.

All KDG websites are developed to work on both MS Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox, the two most popular web browsers. According to recent online browser statistics, Microsoft Internet Explorer has the largest user base with 85% of browsers and Mozilla Firefox holds around 12% of the browser market [1]. Even though most web users (70%) run screen resolutions of 1024 x 768 or higher, a large number (25%) of user still use screen resolutions of 800 x 600 which is why KDG develop all their sites at a minimum resolution of 800 x 600 pixels [2].

When building your website, KDG also take into account the fact that a large proportion of Australians access the Internet using dial-up modems. We therefore utilise efficient programming techniques and the latest optimisation and file compression software so that your website loads quickly.

As part of this process it may be required for a KDG Developer to adapt your interface design. These will usually be very minor changes to the sites design however should a major change be required your KDG Project Manager will contact you immediately to notify you of the changes and you will be asked to approve these before any work continues. Once the website layout is constructed, it is tested on a range of platforms using various web browsers to ensure your website operates consistently on various operating systems. With the layout constructed, it is now time to integrate the proprietary KSM Framework.
